Emily Bache is a Technical Agile Coach and long-term proponent of agile development practices like Test-Driven Development. Emily is a published author with Pluralsight and wrote “The Coding Dojo Handbook”. She is currently writing a follow-up book called “Technical Agile Coaching”. Emily regularly speaks at conferences such as Craft, Agile Testing Days, ACCU, Europython and NDC. She is originally from the UK but now lives in Sweden.

Approval testing

Ron Jeffries recently wrote a series of articles about the Gilded Rose Kata. He tries various solutions and learns a lot along the way, (hooray!) One thing he wrote that surprised me was “I hate writing tests for existing code, and I know I’m not the only one”.

Actually, I like writing tests. It’s an interesting challenge, working out what the code does and how to test enough functionality so I can refactor safely. Perhaps another reason is because I often use Approval Testing. It seems to me I can get better tests with less test code.
